Etihad Airways began operations in 2003, and in 2015 carried 17.4 million passengers. Abu Dhabi Airports is a public joint-stock company, launched in 2006 to spearhead the development of the Emirate's aviation industry, with the vision of becoming the world’s leading airports group.

The company operates five airports: Abu Dhabi International Airport, Al Ain International Airport, Al Bateen Executive Airport, Delma Island Airport and Sir Bani Yas Airport.

Over 23 million passengers passed through Abu Dhabi International Airport in 2015. That figure is forecast to rise in the coming years and Abu Dhabi Airports is investing heavily in order to be able to handle the predicted growth in traffic. Currently under construction is the new Midfield Terminal Building, an ambitious multi-billion dirham 700,000m2 mega project, due to open at the end of 2017.
